In Europe about 90% of us live in cities - the command centres of our world. America on the other hand, with so much space at its disposal, can afford to waste land: indeed, it has the worst sustainability record in the western world. And that is basically because it refuses to plan cities. It also has the worst record of riots in the western world. That said, it is vastly encouraging to see the beginnings of planned cities and of a move back to city centres - reflecting a basic understanding of social needs and a desire to turn these into a physical manifestation. | vi |
